Faith + Athletics

The ancient Greek philosopher Plato once observed, “You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.” Fast forward over 2,000 years later and listen to the words of legendary UCLA Basketball Coach John Wooden, “Sports do not build character. They reveal it.” Perhaps Wooden was right, but are there steps that can be taken to assist the “character building” aspect of sports? This seminar takes a closer look at sports in our culture, discussing the place of athletics within the Biblical story and education. It also helps participants think through better practices for how to intentionally integrate character development as athletes and coaches.

Derek Melleby was involved in Athletes in Action while playing basketball at Bloomsburg University (NCAA Div. II). He also has coaching experience at the college level. This seminar has been presented to high school and college athletes as well as high school and college athletic departments.
